Guangdong Modern Dance Company

Guangdong Modern Dance Company
The Guangdong Modern Dance Company (Guangdong xiandai wudaotuan) pioneered China’s first professional modern dance troupe. Within a decade it has become internationally renowned for its fascinating blend of contemporary dance vocabulary, Western music and ballet, and the rich dance heritage of China. It has won many prizes at home and abroad, including the three gold prizes consecutively at the biennial Paris International Dance Competitions. The company tours in Asia and Europe frequently. In 2001, it toured the USA for the third time and Canada for the first, during which the dancers’ captivating performances were sold out. Domestically, it works to broaden the understanding of dance among the young people by touring regularly to universities, schools and remote villages. In June 2002, the troupe celebrated its tenth anniversary by performing award-winning works from the last decade and debuts works of young choreographers of the company, including the new four-act Meng Bai (Dreaming of Li Bai) to commemorate the 1,300th anniversary of the death of the poet (701–62). Some of the company’s dance pieces include The Pond, in which the dancers give plausible renditions of the spirits of the true and false, beautiful and ugly; Carnivore, which is a horror story where everyone is corrupt and nothing is left unsullied by craven desire, and even death is no release; as well as Sitting Still, Other Kinds, 180 Degrees, Sitting Still, I Want to Fly and Heart, Shape, Substance.
